There are two things I know a lot about — books and saving money. Luckily, I often find a way to combine these two things. One of my favourite pursuits is going on the used book hunt . . . and I’m not talking about in stores. I do my hunting off the beaten path, out of the safety of bookish enclaves.
There are a couple of advantages to this. One, it’s fun, and two, you get books dirt cheap (anywhere from $0.25 to $2). I have a few regular haunts — notably the public library sales, garage sales and my beloved reuse centre in my hometown, however, you can there are plenty of others: church sales, university sales, flea markets, public library cast-offs, etc.
In any case, I thought I’d share the thrill of the hunt with you all, by presenting my trophies when I bring in a big haul. This week’s purchases:
Clockwise from the top left:
East of Eden, by John Steinbeck (Penguin Classics Paperback): I’ve already read it, but it’s a tremendous book it’s always good to have on the shelf, and this copy was in great shape.
The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch (HC): It’s been on the bestseller list forever, so I figured I’d see what’s all the fuss is about. The book looks pretty Secret-esque, but I think it’ll fall way closer to Tuesdays with Morrie
Unforgettable: An It Girl Novel (PB): Having become addicted to Gossip Girl (the tv series) in the recent year, I couldn’t help buy this for a fellow addict. I may have a flip through first though
La Cucina, by Lily Prior (PB): It says it’s like Like Water for Chocolate, and that was enough for me. I’m a big fan of magic realism – even its fluffy varieties.
Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Penguin Classics paperback): Haven’t read this one yet, but with Mr. Fitzgerald, how could you go wrong?
Annie John, by Jamaica Kincaid (PB): I’ve only read the rant that is A Small Place, so I’d like to see what this slender novel can hold.
Candy Girl, by Diablo Cody (PB): Major points to my BF for pulling out this one. My friend Reeder recommended it to me a while ago, and I can’t wait to read it. Cody’s now-famous wit + the world of strippers? Seriously, I can’t wait.
The Camera My Mother Gave Me, by Susanna Kaysen (HC): I’ve read Girl, Interrupted, so this caught my eye. I picked up this battle story from the gynecological trenches for my fellow vagina warrior B., but I’ll probably give it a read before it goes in the mail.
(Not pictured: A paperback copy of James Frey’s Million Little Pieces for my boyfriend.)
TOTAL SPENT: $7.25
